McCalla is named for Richard Calvin McCalla who served as one of the chief engineers for the southern railroads of Chattanooga and Alabama. He single-handedly worked as a civil engineer connecting Knoxville, Northern Ohio and Tuscaloosa and would eventually become a surveyor for the river system and the very first mayor of McCalla.
